Schalk Joubert’s 3 Continents Sextet

Schalk Joubert’s ensemble is made up of  new generation jazz musicians. All schooled musicians from the younger modern jazz scene where technical ability and inspiration are both necessities. One might say all of them are stars in their own right. For the Borneo Jazz festival he will present 7 musicians on stage.

Schalk Joubert, on electric bass and vocals – Cape Town born, award winning producer, arranger and performer. Based between Europe and South Africa. Performs contra bass and electric bass. He is regularly in the USA, Australia, UK, Western Europe. Recently played with Ginger Baker and Michelle Shocked.

Karin Hammar, on trombone – Stockholm based graduate of the Royal Conservatory. Recorded with jazz names like Steve Swallow and Carla Bley. She has her own quartet and her own CDs. Her heart is in jazz but she loves salsa and Brazilian music as well.

Rich Armstrong , on vocals, guitar, percussion and trumpet – Very busy San Francisco based multi-instrumentalist.  He performs in the USA live with Boz Scaggs, Thomas Dolby, Cold Blood, blues star Kenny Wayne Shepherd and has guested on stage with such names as Bruce Springsteen. He is the lead vocalist for Schalk’s group.

Kevin Gibson, on drums  – Graduate of Natal University Jazz School under Darius Brubeck, Berklee and the North Florida Jazz schools and himself former teacher at the UCT jazz drum department. Worked with, Johnny Fourie, Herb Ellis, Jackson Browne, Winston Mankunku and many more.

Shannon Mowday, alto sax and clarinet – Currently based in Oslo completing advanced music studies. Former winner of the Old Mutual young Jazz musician of the year award. She has her own album recorded together with James Morrison .

Melissa van der Spy, grand piano – Highly talented jazz musician and composer and long standing member of Schalk’s groups live and on record. Her second side includes her own Ousus group with whom she has 2 albums. Melissa is an honours graduate in Jazz performance and composition having studied in Cape Town and London.

Hildegunn Oiseth , trumpet – Norwegian avant-garde modern jazz is her bag. Working with electronics and  special playing tricks. She is currently a permanent member of the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra, has her own group and her own albums (the latest nominated for a Norwegian Grammy) and is a quirky performer on traditional instruments, for example the goats horn. Recently performed in Palestine and Pakistan.
