The USM Mini Big Band is a smaller group formed from the USM Jazz Band, the university’s jazz orchestra. Players are all composed of Universiti Sains Malaysia students and staff from various faculties and departments all with the passion of music-making, the single element that ties them together. Founded in 1998, the USM Jazz Band was formed by Associate Professor Razif Mohd @ Jeep, a music lecturer at the university and a passionate Jazz musician. Ever since its inception, the band has been actively performing both within and outside of the university. The USM Jazz Band annually organises its mega concert since 1998 and has grown exponentially from then on. The Mini Big Band has also performed for various events and participated in various international and university level competitions.
