BORNEO JAZZ 2012 LAUNCHED!

Kuching, 11 January 2012 – Borneo Jazz 2012 was today launched by YB Minister of Housing & Minister of Tourism Sarawak, Datuk Amar Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Abang Haji Openg at his office at the Ministry of Tourism. The event will be held at the Parkcity Everly Hotel, Miri from May 11 – 12, 2012.

As part of Sarawak Tourism Board’s transformation and continuous improvement, the organizing of this festival is geared towards a commercial basis to bring it to greater heights. As such the organization of the festival for 2012, will continue to be undertaken by STB Leisure & Properties, a subsidiary of Sarawak Tourism Board (STB). STB however will continue to focus on the promotion and publicity of the event itself.

STB will also continue with its internship and volunteer programme which was first initiated last year. Here the organization will work with colleges or universities to have their students as interns or volunteers for the festival and at the same time exposing them to the product experiences of Sarawak’s culture, adventure and nature. The aim is to have 70% of students participating in this programme from outside Sarawak. This is another step towards bringing the festival to the international arena. For this year the Board has 2 interns from NHTV Breda University, Netherlands and another 2 from Taylors University KL and UCSI University Kuching respectively. According to the CEO, Dato Rashid Khan, “This will not be the only 4 interns as more will be coming to join us in the New Year.”

The Board is also collaborating with the private sector to design packages to attract visitors not only from neighbouring Brunei and Singapore but also from the region and overseas. With these packages, visitors would be able to attend the festival at night and during the day, they can visit places of interest or participate in the local activities.

This year’s event will be an exciting one and confirmed groups are New Cool Collective from the Netherlands, Schalk Joubert’s 3 Continents Sextet (South Africa), Nita Aartsen (Indonesia), SLIXS (Germany), Koh Mr Saxman and Takeshi Band (Thailand), Tangora (France), Tropic Green (Singapore) and F.V.E. Project (Malaysia) featuring a range of jazz genres.

For 2012, the Board hopes to attract a crowd of 9000 for the 2 nights event. Out of this it targets a third of visitors from outside Sarawak. This will augur well for the local business community and also contribute significantly to the arrival figures to the state as a whole.

Daily tickets priced at RM60 for adults and RM30 for children aged 3 to 12 will be available online from 1 February 2012. Look out for more new and exciting initiatives for the coming Jazz festival by logging on to www.jazzborneo.com.

Besides the good music and great company we will also have stalls selling a wide variety of local and fusion food and beverages as well as festival memorabilia at the venue.
